Primary care providers in Prince Edward Island can now easily access specialists in Nova Scotia to discuss patient care through an expansion of the Virtual Hallway online consultation platform, further improving patient care for Islanders and potentially reducing the need for out-of-province travel.

Over a 6 month evaluation period, Nova Scotia’s Health Innovation Hub independently evaluated over 2,500 consultations. They learned that over 84 per cent of the referrals facilitated by the Virtual Hallway platform have patients to avoid a wait list entirely. Also, primary care providers rated Virtual Hallway 4.9 out of 5. “Results like this are what fuels us,” says Dr. Gail Tomblin Murphy, Vice President, Research, Innovation and Discovery and Chief Nurse Executive, Nova Scotia Health. “It is extremely rewarding to witness the direct impacts on patients care and leading change for the system.”
